چکیده

Through comprehensive simulation studies, we have evaluated the ATM layer end-to-end performance of a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) MPEG2 connection. For most practical cases that we have considered, a Cell Delay Variation (CDV) value of 160sec is obtained (using 155 Mbps OC-3 rate), well below the 1 msec worst case stated in prior studies 1]]2]. The results also indicate that the Uniform distribution proposed in the ATM Forum provides a pessimistic model for the cell delay variation. We demonstrate that a Gamma distribution adequately models the cell delay and delay variation (CDV). We also study the eeect of various network/source parameters (such as the background load, the number of background sources, the number of hops, and the link-speed) on the variances of CDV and the end-to-end delay of the reference connection. Finally, we examine the variation in the cell delay correlation of a reference connection with the above parameters. We show that the correlation is a decreasing non-periodic/periodic function if the reference CBR is multiplexed with the same/other classes of CBR connections .

Analysis of VBR Traffic on ATM Network using Simulation Method

ATM or Asynchronous Transfer Mode is a network transfer technique that supports a large variety of applications having diverse performance requirements and service. Traffic bandwidths and traffic types are supported by it from constant, fixed rate traffic to the traffic that is highly bursty. The delay bandwidth and loss requirements of the present day real time multimedia traffics greatly diff...

Measurement-based delay performance estimation in ATM networks

Real-time traffic requires strict delay constraints in terms of maximum cell transfer delay(CTD) and cell delay variation(CDV). In order to support the required quality of service (QoS) of each connection in ATM networks, it is important to estimate the current status of networks by using local information such as cell delay and delay variation in switches. We develop a framework for obtaining ...

A Novel Cell Scheduler with QoS Guarantee for Services in ATM Networks∗

Real-time services, including constant bit rate (CBR) and real-time variable bit rate traffic (rt-VBR), have become increasingly important owing to the rapid proliferation of multimedia applications. A cell multiplexing method capable of handling real-time traffic should satisfy related quality of service (QoS) requirements, including cell transfer delay (CTD), cell delay variation (CDV) and ce...

Design and Implementation of a QoS Oriented Data-Link Control Protocol for CBR Traffic in Wireless ATM Networks

This paper presents a QoS oriented Data Link Control (DLC) framework for transporting Constant Bit Rate (CBR) traffic over wireless ATM links. Data link control is usually omitted in fixed ATM networks because cell corruption due to channel error is extremely rare for reliable media like copper wire and optical fiber. However, for wireless, higher bit error rates are quite common due to shadowi...

Intelligent Voice Smoother for VBR Voice over ATM Networks

For distinctively transporting voice data with silence suppression over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Am) networks via the Variable Bit Rate (VBR) service, the problem of jitter introduced from the network often renders the speech unintelligible. It is thus indispensable to offer intramedia synchronization to remove jitter while retaining minimal playout delay. In this paper, we propose a neural–...
